Ween, the cosmic goof of the 90s to the 2000s, what to not like about?
Well maybe some songs that are considered penis music but it's totally
Ween.
Well way before we all cried and laughed to Quebec, in the 80s, Aaron
Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo met in 9th Grade and started recording
their songs to Cassette tape, there are quite a few of them but i won't
be covering them because they are horrible on purpose and i don't plan
to listen to them all.
They got signed into Twin/Tone some time later, they chose songs from
their early tapes to get into the album, lazy asses. Except the songs
We're more lyrically and comedically rich instead off... well i don't
know how to explain the sound of ther early tapes, let's call it
"Presentation.", God Ween Satan was released in 16 November 1990.
It's somewhat what you could expect, just Dean and Gene goofing around
for 75 minutes, yes, you've read that correct, it can sometimes get
frustrating but it's sometimes comedy gold. I'd suggest it if you're
into some edgy comedy about Gene screaming about a bumblebee that stung
him 47,000 times in the head.
Ween toured for 7 months to promote God Ween Satan, except the fact is
that their album was allready finished when they came back home, they
also got evicted, at least their next album was out, The Pod is yet
another comedy album, except it's about Pork Roll Egg and Cheese sandwiches
now. The Pod is less accessible because like me, you wont like it on the
first listen. A few relistens are enough to either enjoy it or to love it.
Also guess what? It's 75 other minutes of Gene and Dean goofing around,
except it's way too unlistenable and distorted for some songs. Look, i
really appriciate some songs on this album, Doctor Rock is so good, so is
Pollo Asado, but it's just an alright listen, not bad at all, just fine.
After getting evicted, they stayed at their producers (Andrew Weiss')
house. And they only spent $100? what the hell? for their next album.
Pure Guava is on the same levels as The Pod, but there are either some
more enjoyable songs like Don't Get 2 Close 2 My Fantasy or Push Th'
Little Daisies, that song that charted #18 in the Australian charts believe
me or not, the single was successful and a radio hit. There are also songs
that you genuinely can't listen to like the massive 5 minute industrial track,
Mourning Glory, what were they high on? At least there is still the usual
penis music like Pumpin' 4 the Man. this albums tour lasted 7 legs and untill
May 1994 (starting November 1992).
Through the Pure Guava tour, something was off, towards the end of 1993, the
setlist had a few unreleased songs added, the audience didn't know the songs,
it was just Ween moving strategically, they already wrote their next album on
tour. Songs like Freedom Of '76 or A Tear For Eddie randomly appeared, nobody
knew them, anyways, Chocolatte and Cheese was released by Elektra in 27
September 1994, we do not talk about the cover but the album is rather pretty
well made despite being recorded in a small budget in Andrew Weiss' house in
just few weeks, Chocolatte and Cheese was a success, didn't have a charting
like Pure Guava but still successful. The tour started in June 1994 and
lasted 6 legs, up untill May 1996.
in 1996, when they came back, Andrew Weiss was kicked out, Ben Vaughn came
in, they decided to take a new move, Country music? What? Anyways. I don't
know what convinced them but they went on to make a 10 track Country record.
Now i really love Ween but 12 Golden Country Greats feels like a filler episode.
The album was recorded with legends in the Country scene but it doesen't really
impress, it's just a filler album, rushed, it's funny as hell but not that great,
it's fine.
When Ween came back to their beach house (the same place they recorded 12GCG,
their hearts dropped, the beach house was flooded, they had also recorded a
portion of their next album there, The Mollusk, they came back with Andrew Weiss
and this incident influenced the band to make more songs about the ocean in
general for their next album, as a concept, The Mollusk is one of the finest
records made by Ween, heck it inspired Spongebob, that makes it great enough.
it's a great wacky and quirky journey to the ocean, suggest it for everyone.
the tour lasted all up until 1998 and when they came back, Ween recorded
something different, way more accessible, way more radio-friendly, White
Pepper is a little more emotional, happy and accessible, their most accessible
album ever! It was also thier last album with Elektra records, it's pretty good
but it doesen't really represent Ween, feels like a better filler episode.
Back from the White Pepper tour in 2001, 2 horrible things happened to Ween,
their drummer for a while now, Claude Coleman, had a near-death experience
colliding with another veichle, he couldn't play drums anymore, Ween already
started on their next album, Quebec, he couldn't play, so they replaced him
and did 2 concerts called "Claude Aid", all the money went to his treatment.
Second of all, Gene Ween went through a divorce, his wife divorced with him.
Quebec by Ween insists "Make Divorce Beautiful", so many beautiful and perfect
lay down in here, The Argus, Transdermal Celebration, If You Could Save Yourself...
Despite the album being about a serious situation, there is ALWAYS penis music (The
Fucked Jam). The album is a mixed beauty in so many ways.
During the Quebec tour, lasting from 2003 to 2004, they recorded a concert film.
Live in Chicago is some Ween songs at their most obnoxious and best quality ever.
You can't even describe how beautiful some of these songs sound, if you wonder,
go listen to it for yourself, especially Buckingham Green or Transdermal
Celebration.
After the Quebec tour and a short break, Dean and Gene Ween come together for
another one, another album, is it a classic like before? No it's a mix between
good sometimes and absolute shit, the last 2 tracks of La Cucaracha are pretty damn
good but the rest is forgettable slop, this is Ween's last album without a doubt,
it is the worst without a single doubt, the quality drop from Quebec to this is
pretty damn insane.
